Paul Diello Alan Bonner Vexfest Ohio Music Scene interview
It was a pleasure to talk with both Paul and Alan back in May of this year. Special thanks to Lance from Darling Waste for hooking us up and making it happen. We really enjoyed learning about the Brighton Music Awards in England and hearing about Paul’s run in with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.
Taken from Paul’s website. Paul Diello’s debut album The Last Green Bottle was released in October 2011 via indie label Total Creative Freedom to positive reviews from both side of the pond (5/5 breaking music magazine- USA, 5/5 Sound & Motion magazine UK). He won Best Solo Artist at Brighton Music Awards 2010 and was nominated for Best Video. He also performed at the ceremony, held at prestigious venue The Brighton Centre to an audience including Jimmy Page, Roger Daltrey and Arthur Brown. Since the albums release Paul has been touring extensively and has played across the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Holland and America (where he toured for 6 weeks in support of indie/rock band Darling Waste).
His song ‘Crime Scene’ was included on charity album Busking For Solar Aid and his instrumental piece ‘The Walk Home’ is featured in the upcoming movie Pictures Of Lily, due for release in 2013.
As well supporting artists such as Texas, Jarvis Cocker, Nick Harper, Kyla La Grange, Jay Brannan and Kate Walsh, Paul has also worked with some amazing musicians including Andy Maclure (Sleeper) Adrian Weston (Carnival Collective) Paul Sandrone (The Mummers) Lance Williams (Darling Waste) Sophie Madeleine, Steve Down (Joss Stone band) and Miggy Barradas (The Divine Comedy)
Festival appearances include The Big Chill (for two years running) , Meadowlands, Gay Pride Festival-Brighton, Foodie Festival- Brighton, Edinburgh Fringe, Upper East Side Music Festival- New York and his show ‘An Evening With Paul Diello and Friends’ has sold out for three years running at Brighton Fringe Festival.
Paul appeared on Chicago’s infamous Fearless radio and has also performed on BBC Sussex Live Lounge, Juice FM, Fun Couch TV (Ohio) Radio Reverb, MTM radio, Spirit FM, Splash FM. His video for Crime Scene also appears on NME.com
Taken from Alan’s website. Alan Bonner is a singer-songwriter based in London. After leaving his small village in Suffolk for the bright lights of London at 18, he’s spent the past few years writing, recording and playing at venues across the UK and Europe, all the while writing lyrics on beer mats and bashing out chords on a beaten Piano. Since graduating from the Brighton Institute of Modern Music in 2007, Alan’s emotionally-charged live shows have left audiences stunned, not only by the intensity of his performances and quality of his vocals, but by the honesty and confessional nature of his songs. Having supported acts such as FYFE DANGERFEILD, DAVID FORD, IN ME, GOLDHEART ASSEMBLY, and SONS OF NOEL AND ADRIAN, he has built up a loyal following and has played at festivals throughout the UK including OXJAM, GLOBAL GATHERING and BRIGHTON LIVE.
He has taken his music overseas, playing a cluster of shows in Australia in 2010, and embarking on a European Tour in 2011 covering the UK, Italy and Germany. When back in Britain, he frequently gigs on the London circuit, immersing himself in London’s thriving Brit-Folk scene. 2008 saw the independent release of his debut album Songs for the Heart Shaped, which is available from all major digital music retailers [itunes, HMV digital, Napster, and Amazon to name a few], as well as in physical format at selected UK stores. Alan’s songs have also been featured in UK Drama series The Glue, and the short film and TV pilot His Uterus, Her Lover.
Having been compared by critics to the likes of Rufus Wainwright and David Bowie, 2012 sees the release his second album Balladeer. The album will be followed by a supporting UK and European Tour. Balladeer is a set of beautifully-crafted songs of love, loss, hope and redemption from a 21st-century Troubadour with folk leanings and a pop sensibility. With gentle orchestration by cello, piano, ukulele, accordion and guitar, it’s a much more stripped-back affair than its 2008 predecessor.
Listen to Balladeer and you’ll hear Alan’s own unique take on the romantic and the political, the heart-breaking and the uplifting. There’s Talia, the heart-warming ode to a best friend, and Rainbow Man, a vitriolic protest song inspired by the infamous hate-killing of Matthew Shepherd. The nostalgic Autumn is a lonely reflection on a love long-since lost, the hopeful Ocean urges the listener to ‘love like you’ve never been hurt and just dive in’, and a happy-clappy dose of perfect folk-pop comes in the form of Lighthouse Song. Alan is currently looking for management, publishing and label distribution to build on the foundations he’s already laid as an artist, taking his career to the next level and helping him to expand his already growing following.
“Alan Bonner came to create a sort of poetic oasis amongst the more vivacious and aggressive guitar-based bands. His music was an onomatopoeic melange of sounds, where the melodic piano meets the melancholic cello and the softly-stroked guitar. All instruments were then embraced by Alan’s gritty yet mellifluous vocals and the sound of it was interesting. Pieces like Narcissist’s Wet Dream and Talia stood out as possible singles, both reminiscent of Tori Amos’ evocative airs and with decadent themes à la Bowie.” LIVE REVIEW FROM THE WATER RATS, LONDON, NOISE MAKES ENEMIES MAGAZINE
